Arabic Poetry Designs

What does poetry need from a layout?
Room, and the right weight. A classical Arabic line is split into two hemistichs and stops reading correctly if it wraps in the wrong place, so these layouts are built around wide lines that hold a full verse.

What can you design?

  • A single verse set large

  • Longer passages running to several verses

  • Verses with the poet's name set beneath

  • Designs in Thuluth, Diwani and Farsi script

  • Posts and stories at ready sizes

Which fonts suit it best?
Thuluth, Diwani and Farsi, the scripts Arabic poetry has traditionally been written in, all in the Andalusi library. Add tashkeel where the metre needs it, then export at high quality.

الأسئلة الشائعة

How do I set a line of Arabic verse correctly?
Set the two hemistichs on two facing lines rather than running them together, since a verse is read in its two halves. Leave a clear gap between them, keep both at the same size, and give the poet's name beneath in smaller type. Never break a hemistich mid-way to fit the space. Andalusi's poetry templates are built on that split.
Why name the poet on the design?
Because attributing a line correctly is part of getting it right, and much of what circulates online is misattributed or altered. Verify both the line and the poet's name against a reliable source before publishing, and name the poem where the line is well known within it. Andalusi's templates carry a field for the poet and the source.
Which font suits a poetry design?
Diwani and Farsi suit verse for their flow and slant, Naskh suits longer passages for its clarity, and Thuluth suits a single line presented as a panel. Avoid modern geometric faces, which work against the character of the text, and add diacritics only on words whose sense would otherwise be ambiguous. Andalusi's library carries these families in full.
What background suits a poetry design?
A quiet plain, gradient or paper-textured ground, or a very faded image that does not compete with the words. Verse needs more empty space around it than any other text, so leave at least a third of the area clear, and keep busy ornament away from the line. Andalusi has calm backgrounds designed for poetry and quotation.
